Late Lead Not Enough As Farmingdale State Stops Women's Volleyball

Box Score

BROOKLYN, N.Y. —  A strong third set wasn't enough to extend the match to a fourth set as the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback to Farmingdale State College, 25-20, 25-17, 26-24, on Tuesday evening in Skyline Conference play at The Hill Center.

How it Happened

The Bears (4-5, 2-3) jumped out to a 4-1 lead to open the match, but the Rams (9-9, 5-1) assembled a 9-3 spurt to move ahead and remained on top throughout the first.

The visitors carried the momentum into the second stanza building a quick 8-2 lead and SJC couldn't cut into the deficit.

The navy and gray led for nearly the entire third set, creeping out to a 8-4 lead after three early kills from Teuta Hoxha (Kew Gardens, N.Y./Queens Metropolitan). After the Rams knotted the frame at 13-all, SJC built their largest lead of the match at 20-14 with a 7-1 run — sparked by a pair of kills by Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) and a pair of aces by Carol Melo (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep). But Farmingdale reeled the Bears back in at 22-all and after two ties, closed out the match in three.

For the Bears

  • Urgo led the attack for the fifth straight match with seven kills also added 10 digs.
  • Grace Kane (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy), Hoxha, and Ayomide Adeoye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) each had five kills apiece.
  • Kane anchored the defense with 12 digs and Hoxha had eight digs.
  • Making her first start at setter, Caitlyn Bilbao (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) dished out 16 assists and added eight digs.
