BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's basketball team suffered their first defeat of the 2023-24 season, falling to the Maine Maritime Academy 87-62 on Friday afternoon.

How it Happened

Following five points from Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy), the Mariners scored the next 19 points unanswered to end the first quarter with a 20-5 lead. The scoring run was snapped at 22 after three points to begin the second period. The stanza saw Kennedy and Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) combine for 10 of the Bears' 15 points as they went into the halftime break trailing 46-20.

St. Joseph's outscored the visitors 28-20 in the third quarter, thanks in large part to a 13-point outburst from Destiny Hurt (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) and seven from Donovan. However, the Maine Maritime still held an 18-point lead, 66-48, heading into the fourth before confirming their first win of the season, 87-62, behind a 21-point closing period.
