Men’s Basketball Falls to Skyline Unbeaten Farmingdale State

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — A close first half was not enough for the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's basketball team as they dropped a 90-70 result to Farmingdale State College on Saturday afternoon from the Nold Athletic Center.

How it Happened

For much of the first half, the Rams maintained the lead, starting with as little as five points and gradually extending it to nine by the end of the period, resulting in a 39-30 halftime score. Evan Sirakis (Hollis Hills, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and Alex Macheras (Sandy Spring, Md./Sherwood) combined for 14 points in the half, shooting 4-for-7 from three-point range.

The deficit briefly reached double figures before Macheras' hot hand, along with contributions from eventual game-leading scorer Stephan Direny (Brooklyn, N.Y./Achievement First), narrowed the gap to seven with 12:40 remaining, 54-47. However, the hosts quickly reestablished their 10-point lead and pulled away in the final stretch, securing a 25-point victory, 90-70; maintaining their unblemished record in Skyline Conference play.

For the Bears

  • Direny's 16 points marked a season-best for the rookie. Shooting 7-of-12 from the field, he also collected a team-high five rebounds and registered a block.

  • Sirakis logged 15 points and dished out six assists.

  • Macheras also scored a season-best on the afternoon, dropping 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.

  • Nazareth Warren (Brooklyn, N.Y./Spring Creek Campus) finished with seven points and a pair of steals.

  • Justin Nazon (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan Wagner) forced a game-high three steals.
