Women's Volleyball Takes Down Old Westbury in Four

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn women's volleyball team continued their unblemished start to Skyline Conference play on Saturday afternoon, defeating the SUNY College at Old Westbury, 3-1 (25-20, 20-25, 25-18, 26-24).

How it Happened

A back-and-forth opening set saw the Panthers hold a 17-12 advantage. A trio of service aces from Jillian McGinty (Glendale, N.Y.) brought the Bears to 17-16 before kills from Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y.) and Taylor Knight (San Ramon, Calif.) swung the lead back in their favor. A string of aces from Juliette DiVittorio (Astoria, N.Y.) gave the Bears the 25-20 set win.

St. Joseph's' 3-1 lead in the second set was quickly erased by a 9-1 Old Westbury run. Despite coming within three of the Panthers during the stanza, the Bears dropped their first set in league play, falling 20-25. Knight, Urgo, and McGinty had a combined seven kills in the period.

The navy and gray started the third set strong, going on an early 8-0 run with Urgo racking up three aces. The Panthers assembled a rally late in the set but were unable to catch the Bears, winning the set 25-18.

The Bears won the fourth set, 26-24; which featured seven ties and three lead changes. Knight, Urgo, and Jenna Diaz (Middle Village, N.Y.) forged the attack in the set, keeping the squad in the set. With help from Old Westbury's errors at 23-20, the Bears surged ahead to take a 24-23 lead and eventually secured the set, 26-24, and the match, 3-1.
