Women’s Volleyball Sets Program Record for Aces in Win Over York; Splits Final Tri-Match

NEW HAVEN, CONN. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn women's volleyball team earned a split from their Saturday afternoon tri-match; defeating York College (N.Y.) in straight sets for the second time this season (25-4, 25-5, 25-14) before falling to hosts Albertus Magnus College, 1-4 (20-25, 13-25, 25-22, 8-25).

In the opening match, the Bears racked up 35 aces, setting a new program record for a single contest. Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y.) led the charge with 12 aces, marking a career-high while coming two shy of the program's individual single-match record.

How it Happened vs. York

The Bears limited the Cardinals to just nine points over the first two sets. Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) opened the match with two aces, while Taylor Knight (San Ramon, Calif.) added seven, helping fuel an 11-0 run to close out the first set, 25-4. Urgo tallied 11 of her 12 service aces during the final two sets. York managed to score more points in the third set than in the first two combined, but it wasn't enough as the Bears claimed the set, 25-14. Urgo and Knight each recorded three kills in the third set.

In a closely contested first set, the Bears and Falcons traded points, with a combined 10 kills from Knight, Urgo, and McGinty to keep things close. However, the hosts secured the set 25-20 thanks to a 7-0 spurt to end the set.

The Bears jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second set, but couldn't withstand Albertus Magnus' 15-2 run, enough to allow the Falcons to take the set, 25-13.

In the third set, the Bears again started strong, leading 6-1 early. This time, they maintained the lead throughout, with Urgo delivering seven kills to help them win 25-22. However, Albertus Magnus came out on fire in the fourth set, starting with a 13-0 run and ultimately winning 25-8 to claim the match victory, 3-1.
