KINGS POINT, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn men's basketball team opened their Skyline Conference slate on the win column, defeating the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, 69-61, on Saturday afternoon.
How it Happened
The Bears opened the contest with a 13-6 lead behind three-pointers from Adam Jasaraj (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Colin Mills (White Plains, N.Y.). The Mariners countered with a 15-2 run to take a 20-15 with 8:22 to play in the first. Despite the Bears' efforts to trim the deficit, trailing by one following an Alex Macheras (Sandy Spring, Md.) triple at 6:05, 25-24, the hosts' advantage grew to 37-27 at the intermission.
The Bears regained the lead with a 17-3 run to start the second half, taking a 44-40 advantage. Mills and Jonathan Reno (Staten Island, N.Y.) contributed 11 of the team's 17 points during the stretch. Merchant Marine briefly flipped the score in their favor, 45-44, before St. Joseph's regained the lead. Jasaraj and Timothy Richardson (Ozone Park, N.Y.) scored a combined 13 points in the final 10 minutes to secure a 69-61 win for the Bears.
