Neck-and-Neck Start Not Enough in Women's Basketball's Loss to Farmingdale State

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's basketball team suffered a 68-80 defeat to Farmingdale State College on Wednesday evening.

How it Happened

For a large portion of the first quarter, the Bears held the advantage; leading by as many as nine, 22-13, towards the end of the stanza. The Rams scored six straight points to trim the SJBK edge to 22-19 at the end of the period.

The Rams hit the next two field goals before the Bears interrupted the scoring run on a Destiny Hurt (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) pull-up jumper with 6:14 remaining in the half. Neither side led by more than two possessions the rest of the way with FSC clinging to a 35-33 margin at the interval.

A 12-0 spark to begin the third quarter distanced the hosts from the Bears as they led 47-33 at the end of the stretch before taking the 54-40 advantage into the fourth quarter.

A 28-point fourth quarter saw Mercedes Perez (San Antonio, Texas/William Howard Taft) lead the side with nine points followed by Hurt's seven and six from Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and Domenika Sanchez (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Santo Domingo de Guzman). The Bears reduced their deficit to as little as nine on a Perez layup with 18 seconds on the clock before the Rams secured the 12-point win, 80-68.
