Men's Basketball Concludes Campaign with Defeat to USMMA

KINGS POINT, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's basketball team concluded the 2023-24 season with a 70-53 defeat to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
The Mariners opened the game with a 9-3 advantage before James Mojica (South Ozone Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) banked a three-ball to come within a possession. At 23-17, the Bears equalized with Chris Tracy's (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) hitting a triple from the wing. The hosts scored the next 10 unanswered but Alex Macheras (Sandy Spring, Md./Sherwood) hit a pair of free throws to see the Bears trail 33-25 at the half.

The Bears further closed the gap to six thanks to Evan Sirakis' (Hollis Hills, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) three pointer, 39-33. It would be the closest they'd get to the hosts as USMMA restored their double-figure lead two minutes later, holding on for the 70-53 triumph. Sirakis and Nick Shlimov (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) combined for 15 points in the second half.
