BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team returned to The Hill Center for the first time in over a month on Monday evening. However, the Bears fell to St. Joseph's (Long Island) in straight sets (13-25, 16-25, 17-25).
How it Happened
A 9-0 start to the match was enough for the Golden Eagles to hold off the Bears, ultimately taking the set 25-13. Individually, Alex Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) posted three kills in the frame.
Points were exchanged in the beginning of the second, with neither side leading by more than three. Helfant, Lasha Kemashvili (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison), and Frank Rivera (Astoria, N.Y./Gramercy Arts) all recorded kills in the stretch while Keiran McMullan (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) had an ace. At 12-10, Long Island used a 7-1 stretch to pull away from Brooklyn, serving as the catalyst for their 25-16 set win.
The Golden Eagles held a narrow lead to start the third set before the Bears tied the contest at seven all. Six of the next eight points went the way of the visitors, possessing the lead for good. At 17-15, Long Island used an 8-2 run to secure the 25-17 set win and 3-0 match victory.
