Men's Volleyball Snaps Skid; Sweeps Old Westubry

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team brought their losing skid to a halt, defeating the SUNY College at Old Westbury 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-21) on Thursday evening.

How it Happened
The Bears forced the Panthers into an early timeout after surging to a 5-0 lead. The Panthers would claw their way to an 8-7 deficit before the Bears' 17-8 run produced nine kills, three of which from Lasha Kemashvili (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison), to take the opening set, 25-15.

Old Westbury's early lead in the second set was erased thanks to a string of Alex Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) and Frank Tello (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International). The pair, along with Kemashvili, totaled 10 kills for the Bears as they narrowly took the set 25-20.

The entirety of the third set was back and forth with neither side leading by more than four in the entire stanza. Tello spearheaded the navy and gray's attack in the set with four kills. An 8-2 spurt capped off the 25-21 set and 3-0 match win.

For the Bears
  • Helfant and Tello each had 10 kills, jointly leading all players.
  • Helfant and Leonel Bravo (Astoria, N.Y./Queens Vocational & Technical) each brought up 12 digs.
  • Frank Rivera (Astoria, N.Y./Gramercy Arts) had a match-high 17 digs to go with eight kills.
  • Keiran McMullan (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) handed out 33 assists.
