STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) baseball team picked up their first win of the season on Thursday evening, defeating Lehman College, 11-2. The victory marked the first under the direction of head coach John Downey.
Brian Sanchez (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) and Carmine Carbone (Middle Village, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) each went 3-for-5 at the plate with the latter driving in a trio of runs.
How it Happened
Following a Lightning sacrifice fly in the top of the first, the Bears responded in the bottom of the inning thanks to Carbone's two-RBI triple. Thomas Jankowski (Middle Village, N.Y./Maspeth) and Jake McDonald (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) kept the visitors at bay over seven innings, conceding just one more run on four hits.
A Dominic Yumul (Saipan/Northern Mariana Islands Marianas) double in the sixth gave the navy and gray a 3-1 lead.
After Lehman cut their deficit to one, the Bears broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh. A bases-loaded walk and Miguel Toribio's (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williamsburg Prep) two-RBI double gave SJBK a 6-4 advantage. The margin grew to 9-3 behind an inside-the-park home run from Matthew Quinones (South Ozone Park, N.Y./Cathedral Prep).
Carbone brought in his third run of the game in the eighth as his single down the left field line scored Sean Schneeberg (Sacramento, Calif./Del Oro). Nick Tapio's (Sacramento, Calif./Christian Brothers) sacrifice fly later in the frame confirmed the Bears' 11-2 result.
