PURCHASE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (16-25, 21-25, 16-25) defeat against Purchase College on Thursday evening.
How it Happened
The Panther pair of Tyler Ryan and Channing Williams combined for eight kills in the opening set. Alex Helfant (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International) produced five kills in the span but it wasn't enough to take the set, falling 25-16.
Kills from Helfant and Lasha Kemashvili (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison), along with unforced errors from the hosts, saw the Bears lead 10-9; forcing Purchase into taking a timeout. The stanza remained neck-and-neck throughout with the Panthers outsourcing SJBK, 16-11, following the timeout to win the set 25-21.
Despite a deficit as narrow as five, 12-7, Purchase's 7-0 start to the third set was too much for the Bears to overcome, dropping the frame 25-16 and the match 3-0.
