BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) came away with a sweep of sibling school St Joseph's (Long Island) on Saturday afternoon, earning 6-4 and 16-8 victories.
How it Happened (Game 1)
The Golden Eagles drew first blood in the top of first while the Bears quickly retaliated, scoring one run in the bottom of the first. The visitors restored their lead with a two-RBI Single in the top of the second; adding their fourth run in the top of the fifth.
The Bears cut their deficit in half on Vivian Garcia (Eastvale, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt) single to left in the fifth. Following Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) sacrifice fly later in the frame, Lauren Van Der Kamp two-RBI single gave the Bears a 5-3 lead. Bella Gomez (Whittier, Calif./Sonora) scored the Bears 6th point to seal their 6-4 win.
How it Happened (Game 2)
The Golden Eagles soared to an early 3-0 lead before the Bears, highlighted by Payton Walker's (Eastvale, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt) 2-RBI double, responded with a seven-run inning in the bottom of the first. Garcia, Poppett, and Gomez all recorded an RBI in the stanza.
Long Island trimmed the deficit to two in the top of the second. Then the Bears distanced themselves thanks to a massive eight-run fourth inning. Walker had a pair of doubles that brought three of the team's eight in the frame while Gomez also had a pair of RBI's in the middle of the inning.
Back-to-back triples highlighted the fifth inning for the visitors before Garcia scored on Poppett's single to right field confirmed the Bears' 16-8 run-rule victory.
