MADISON, N.J. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn women's volleyball team saw their five-match win streak come to an end; dropping a non-conference decision to FDU-Florham, 1-3 (25-23, 22-25, 21-25, 14-25) on Tuesday evening.
How it Happened
The first set began with both teams trading points, with Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) fortifying the Bears' attack with six kills. The Devils used a 6-0 run at 23-17 to level the set at 23 before a Nikiya Philemon (Hamburg, N.J./Sussex County Technical) kill contributed to a 25-23 set win.
FDU-Florham took an early 4-0 lead but St. Joseph's fought back behind points from Taylor Knight (San Ramon, Calif./Dougherty Valley) and Jenna Diaz (Middle Village, N.Y./Townsend Harris). The set was closely contested but the hosts maintained their advantage and closed out the set 25-22 with a decisive kill from Gabbie Hart.
The edge see-sawed once more in the third frame. Urgo and Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) had early kills while Diaz produced a pair of service aces. However, errors towards the end of the set saw FDU-Florham claim the set 25-21.
The closing stanza commenced with a 5-1 Devil lead. At 9-7, the hosts used a 10-1 run to distance themselves from the Bears; winning the set 25-14 and the match 3-1.
