BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) women's volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to Farmingdale State College on Saturday afternoon at The Hill Center, 3–1 (15–25, 20–25, 25–23, 15–25), in their home finale.
The Bears opened the match with a three-point in the first set, 7-4, before the Rams shifted control behind four service aces and a .250 hitting mark to take the opener 25–15. The Bears produced eight kills in the frame but was limited by early errors. The second set was closely played through the midpoint, with thirteen ties and multiple sideouts on both sides. St. Joseph's briefly led 17–15 on kills from Carissa Zwiefelhofer (North Bend, Wash.) and Taylor Knight (San Ramon, Calif.), but a late stretch from the visitors shifted the frame, and Farmingdale State closed the set 25–20.
St. Joseph's responded in the third behind improved serve-and-pass rhythm and front-row balance. The Bears built a lead at 19-13 on kills from Texans Abigail Encinia (Sunnyvale, Texas) and Madeleine Niño (San Antonio, Texas). The Rams tied the set late, but the Bears closed 25–23 on an Encinia kill to cut the match deficit to 2–1.
The visitors regained momentum early in the fourth with a 6–1 opening stretch and added separation through a series of service runs. The Bears pulled within 11–9 after kills from Zwiefelhofer and Knight, but Farmingdale State closed the match with a 14–6 finish to take the set 25–15.
Zwiefelhofer led St. Joseph's with 11 kills, nine assists, and six digs, while Encinia added 10 kills and nine assists. Knight contributed five kills, four service aces, and 24 digs, and Mariana Medrano (El Paso, Texas) anchored the back row with 24 digs.
The Bears will see non-conference action for the final time this season on Sunday, November 2; taking on Medgar Evers College before facing Rutgers University-Camden in a tri-match in South Jersey. First serve against the Cougars is slated for 2 pm.
