GRANTHAM, PA. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) men's basketball team was defeated 94–67 by Washington & Lee University on Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the Messiah Tip-Off Tournament.
The Generals established an early advantage, opening the game on a 12-2 run and converting eight three-pointers in the first half to take a 56–25 lead at halftime. The Bears recorded early scoring from Colin Mills (White Plains, N.Y.), while Jacob Idowu (Wiesbaden, Germany) added eight points before the break, including two three-pointers. A late tip-in by Nazareth Warren (Brooklyn, N.Y.) closed the scoring for the Bears in the first period.
The Bears posted a more efficient offensive performance after halftime, spearheaded by 12 points from Maven Cummings (Brooklyn, N.Y.) while Jorden Bennett (Westhampton, N.Y.), and Blaise Corozzo (Howard Beach, N.Y.) each had seven points. However, the Bears were unable to narrow the margin as Washington & Lee maintained its lead behind thirteen total three-pointers and a forty-seven–thirty-four rebounding advantage to clinch the Messiah Tip-Off Tournament.
Cummings led St. Joseph's with 14 points, while Idowu added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Bennett finished with 12 points, five rebounds, and four blocks. Corozzo added seven points off the bench.
The Bears make their home debut on Tuesday, November 18 at 6 pm against Medgar Evers College.
