Manhattanville Stops Women's Basketball in Midweek Skyline Action

The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) women's basketball team opened the week on the road Wednesday night, falling to first-place Manhattanville, 88–63, at Kennedy Gymnasium in Skyline Conference play.

The two squads traded baskets early, highlighted by three-pointers from Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y.) and Judith Vila (Vilassar de Mar, Spain), but the Valiants surged ahead with a 14–2 run to take control of the opening quarter, leading 25–13 after one. The Bears responded well in the second period, using scoring from Donovan, Mercedes Perez (San Antonio, Texas), Nikki Grech (Queens, N.Y.), and Jasmine Chan-Clayton (Melbourne, Australia) to chip away and pull within two at 27–25 midway through the quarter. St. Joseph's shot 50 percent in the frame, with Grech sinking a buzzer beater to reduce the deficit to 37–31 at halftime.

The Valiants regained momentum in the third quarter, gradually stretching its advantage despite a three-pointer from Donovan and baskets by Emma Centrella (Varese, Italy). A late push by the hosts extended the margin to 62–47 entering the fourth. The Valiants continued to convert at a high rate in the final period, keeping the Bears at bay and securing an 88-63 result.

Perez led the Bears with 13 points and six rebounds, while Donovan added 12 points, all from beyond the arc, along with four rebounds and two steals. Vila totaled 10 points, Grech contributed eight points and 10 rebounds, and Centrella finished with eight points and eight boards.

The Bears return to action on Saturday, December 13, traveling to Bronxville, N.Y. for a matchup at Sarah Lawrence College. Tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
