BROOKLYN N.Y. — It was a historic senior day for the St. Joseph's University N.Y - Brooklyn men's basketball team as graduate Joshua Gordon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tied the school record for blocks in a season, recording three in his final game as a Bear to bring his total to 44 on the season. Gordon, Chris Williams (Trenton, N.J.), and Alex Macheras (Sandy Spring, Md.) were all honored in Senior Day ceremonies before a thrilling game which saw the Bears defeat St. Joseph's (Long Island) by a score of 78-74.Â
How it Happened
The Bears jumped out to an early 13-6 lead, capped off by a Williams three-pointer at 14:20. The Golden Eagles came back to take a 25-23 lead with 6:51 remaining in the half. The rest of the half featured five ties and six lead changes as the Golden Eagles led 36-35 at the break. Williams and Colin Mills (White Plains, N.Y.) each had eight points in the first 20 minutes while Gordon and Timothy Richardson (Ozone Park, N.Y.) each had six.
The Bears would face their largest deficit of the game as they trailed by as many as ten with 15:31 remaining in the game, 46-36. A Williams three followed by a Justin Nazon (Staten Island, N.Y.) and-one layup gave the Bears the lead with 8:53 to go, 57-56. With 5:32 remaining, Gordon picked up his third block of the game and 44th on the season, tying the program's single-season record. The Bears further stretched their lead to seven thanks to a Mills three-pointer with 1:22 remaining. The Golden Eagles would answer and cut the Bears lead to two but clutch free throws down the stretch from Gordon, Williams, and Nazon sealed the Bears' 78-74 victory.Â
For the Bears
- Nazon led the Bears in scoring with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting while contributing 11 rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
- In addition to matching the single-season blocks record, Gordon added 15 points while grabbing 13 rebounds.Â
- Williams had 15 points, six rebounds, four assists, and a pair of steals.
- Richardson also scored 15 points off the bench.
- The Bears conclude the season with a 6-19 mark overall, 3-13 in Skyline play.
