Women's Basketball Ends Season with Back-to-Back Wins; Bests Yeshiva in the Bronx

BRONX, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University N.Y. - Brooklyn women's basketball team concluded its 2024-25 season with a 61-59 victory over Yeshiva University on Saturday night from the APEX Gym on the campus of Lehman College.

How it Happened

Daniella Bessler guided the Maccabees to an 8-2 start before the Bears surged with a 10-2 run, ending the first quarter with a 12-10 lead. They maintained the advantage through the second quarter, at one point leading by as many as eight points, 29-21. A Yeshiva three-pointer in the closing seconds of the half trimmed the SJBK lead to 29-24. Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y.) led the team with eight points in the first half, while Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y.) added five, and Nikki Grech (Northville, Mich.) and Gabriella Cinque (Staten Island, N.Y.) chipped in with four each.

The Bears extended their lead to a game-high 42-29 midway through the third quarter. However, the Maccabees outscored the Bears 10-6 in the final minutes of the period, reducing their deficit to 46-39 heading into the fourth. The hosts started the final quarter strong, scoring the first seven points to tie the game at 46. The Bears regained a 53-48 lead on critical baskets from Donovan. After Aaniya Telford (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a pair of free throws to put St. Joseph's ahead 55-53, Yeshiva's Jasmin Maly-Danker drained two three-pointers to give YU a 59-55 lead. With key baskets from Telford and Domenika Sanchez in the final moments, the Bears captured the two-point victory, capping off the 2024-25 season.

For the Bears

  • Shooting 4-of-9 from distance, Donovan finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals.
  • Grech had a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds. Seven of her 12 boards came on the offensive end. She also had three assists.
  • Telford and Cinque each had seven points. The former collected four caroms while the latter had three boards.
  • Sanchez finished with six points and three assists.
  • The Bears conclude Joe Giacchi's second season at the helm at 9-15, 8-12 in Skyline Conference play, doubling their league win total from the 2023-24 season.
