SJLI Tops Men’s Volleyball

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn men's volleyball team fell to sibling school St. Joseph's – Long Island, 0-3 (13-25, 19-25, 22-25), on Thursday evening.

How it Happened

A 7-2 lead for the Golden Eagles later grew to 20-9 in the first set. Despite five kills from Jeremias Martinez (Elmhurst, N.Y.) and a pair from Frank Rivera (Astoria, N.Y.), the hosts took the stanza 25-13.

The second set started like the first with Long Island holding an early 6-2 advantage. However, Brooklyn picked up 10 of the next 17 points to close their deficit to one, 13-12, with Martinez and Mark Belov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) notching a pair of kills each in the span. A combination of kills and aces propelled the Golden Eagles to a 25-19 set.

In a close third set, in which the Bears trailed by no more than five, SJBK used five kills and three aces while taking advantage of some SJLI miscues to keep pace. Ultimately, the Golden Eagles took the set by three, 25-22, sweeping the Bears and winning their eighth-straight Skyline Conference match.
