BRONX, N.Y. — St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn softball came away with a split against the University of Mount Saint Vincent on Sunday afternoon at Fordham University. The Bears claimed a 13-6 victory in the opener, while the Dolphins responded with a 9-1 win in game two to even the doubleheader.
How it Happened (Game 1)
Payton Walker (Eastvale, Calif.) opened the scoring with a two-run triple in the first inning, and Lauren Van Der Kamp followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-0. The Dolphins scored in their half of the first before a string of RBI singles brought the SJBK lead to 7-1 after two.
UMSV used a three-run fifth to trim their deficit to 7-4. St. Joseph's broke a scoring drought with two runs in the sixth, capitalizing on defensive miscues and timely hitting – including RBI hits from Van Der Kamp and Jessica Jakob (Covina, Calif.) – to extend their lead. The Dolphins again responded in the bottom half with two runs of their own, tightening the score to 9-6.
The Bears tacked on four insurance runs in the top of the seventh, adding to their 13-hit effort on the day. The Dolphins were held scoreless in the bottom of the frame, as pitcher Makena Burr closed out the complete game victory, 13-6.
How it Happened (Game 2)
After a scoreless opening frame, the Dolphins struck first with two runs in the second inning and broke the game wide open in the fourth, plating seven runs on eight hits to take a commanding 9-0 lead.
The Bears scratched across their lone run in the top of the fifth when Kamryn Walls (Middle Village, N.Y.) led off with a single and later scored on a Mount Saint Vincent error. St. Joseph's was limited to just three hits in the 9-1 setback.
For the Bears (Game 1)

Walker 4-for-5 with a double, triple, stolen base, three runs, and four RBI.

Van Der Kamp also had four RBI as she went 1-for-3.

Leila Heller (Belle Chasse, La.) finished 3-for-5 with a double, four runs, and an RBI.

Vivian Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.) batted 2-for-4 with a trio of runs and a pair of RBI.

Jakob, Brielle Nelson (Chandler, Ariz.), and Audrey Scott (Rocklin, Calif.) all had hits and the latter two posted runs.
