Baseball Narrowly Topped by Old Westbury Twice

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — After a pair of postponements, the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn baseball team dropped 3-4 and 5-6 decisions to SUNY Old Westbury on Monday afternoon at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.

How it Happened (Game 1)

With two on and one out in the top of the fourth, Chris Perez (Bronx, N.Y.) singled to right field, plating Miguel Toribio (Brooklyn, N.Y.) for the game's opening run while Nicholas Mirabella (Whitestone, N.Y.) tossed four scoreless innings. The Panthers later tied and took the lead in the fifth, extending the edge to 3-1 after six.

Justin Haluck (Plainedge, N.Y.) led the seventh with an infield single, advancing to third on a pair of passed balls. With the bases loaded, the rookie scored as Andrew Ardito (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch. Vincent Camerada (Staten Island, N.Y.) later hit into a fielder's choice, allowing Christopher Stegmuller (Baldwin, N.Y.) to score the Bears' go-ahead run, 3-2.

However, Old Westbury's leadoff bat doubled to begin the home half of the seventh, ultimately scoring on an RBI single to take game one, 4-3.

How it Happened (Game 2)

St. Joseph's saw Camerada and Ardito score on a two-out single from Stegmuller in the first. The Panthers responded with two runs of their own in the second to draw the game level, 2-2. The Bears reclaimed the lead in the third as a base hit to center off the bat of Doug Paider (Glendale, N.Y.) plated Stegmuller. The hosts again countered, this time with four runs in their end of the frame, 6-3.

The Bears closed the gap to 6-5 thanks to runs in the sixth and eighth innings. They could not cause further damage, falling by one in the nightcap.

For the Bears (Game 1)

  • Haluck propelled the offense going 3-for-4 with a double and run scored.

  • Perez went .500 at the plate, driving in a run.

  • Toribio, Ardito, and Michael Gardener (Farmingdale, N.Y.) all had hits.

  • Mirabella turned in an outing of six innings, striking out two while not conceding an earned run. He ended with a no-decision.

  • Mike Dedella (Pemberton, N.J.) was dealt the loss in relief.

For the Bears (Game 2)

  • Stegmuller had a 3-for-4 game with two runs and as many RBI.

  • Gardener also batted 3-for-4 and crossed the plate once.

  • Ardito had a pair of hits.

  • Paider, Matt Arcati (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and Matthew Quinones (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) all had RBI.

  • Joe Provvisiero (Ozone Park, N.Y.) was tabbed the defeat, tossing five innings. He, Ardito, and Kris Vinski (Bridgehampton, N.Y.) combined for four strikeouts.
