BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) men's basketball team was defeated 85–72 by St. Joseph's (Long Island) on Saturday afternoon at The Hill Center.
The opening half featured repeated swings in momentum, with the score tied or within one possession for much of the first eight minutes. Maven Cummings (Brooklyn, N.Y.) opened the game converting on a pair of drives to the basket while Jacob Idowu (Wiesbaden, Germany) drained a three-pointer as part of an early 7-0 run. The Bears' lead hovered over two possessions for much of the first half before the Golden Eagles began to separate late in the period, taking a 28-27 lead with 5:22 left in the half before extending the margin to 38-34 at the break.
Long Island extended its lead to nine early in the second half, 45-36. The Bears responded by clawing at the 15-point Golden Eagle lead. Justin Munson (Middle Village, N.Y.) scored on a putback and a post move on consecutive possessions while Colin Mills (White Plains, N.Y.) added a transition finish to cut the deficit to eight, 65-57. Brooklyn remained within striking distance towards the latter part of the stanza, with Cummings banking shots from distance. However, the Golden Eagles closed out the contest from the line, shooting 8-of-9 in the final minute, to secure the victory.
Cummings, in his first start of the season, eclipsed his previous of 23 points with a 33-point outing, on 12-of-16 shooting and 6-of-8 from three-point range, to lead all scorers. He also added eight rebounds. Mills had 15 points while Austin Wrynn (Port Washington, N.Y.) accumulated nine points and Munson finished with seven points. Idowu pulled down seven rebounds and scored five points.
The Bears return home on Wednesday, January 14, against the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 pm.
