Women’s Basketball Dealt Narrow Home Defeat by Mount Saint Mary

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) women's basketball team resumed Skyline Conference play on Tuesday night, coming up just short in a 60–59 setback to Mount Saint Mary College at The Hill Center.

Following an opening three-pointer from Mercedes Perez (San Antonio, Texas), the Knights used an early run to build an advantage and led 18–6 after the first quarter. St. Joseph's settled in during the second, matching Mount Saint Mary basket for basket over the ten-minute stretch. Perez connected from deep again, while offensive contributions were made by Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y.), Judith Vila (Vilassar de Mar, Spain), and Aaniya Telford (Brooklyn, N.Y.) as the Bears trimmed what had been an 13-point deficit — the visitors' largest of the night — to 28–20 at the halftime break.

Fueled by a pair of Donovan three-pointers in the third, the Bears continued to chip at their deficit, trailing 46-37 by the start of the fourth quarter.

Delivering their strongest stretch in the fourth quarter, SJBK outscored MSMC 22–14 while cutting the deficit to a single possession multiple times in the final minutes; including a 10-0 run, behind triples from Donovan and Perez and an interior presence from Emma Centrella (Varese, Italy), to tie the game at 59-all with 25 seconds to go. The Knights, however, answered from the free-throw line in the closing seconds to hold on for the one-point win.

Perez topped the team with 20 points, shooting 6-of-13 from beyond the arc, while collecting eight rebounds. Donovan followed with 13 points, a pair of boards and as many assists. Centrella had a game-high 11 rebounds and was a pair of points short of a double-double. Telford finished with six points.

The Bears travel to Riverdale on Friday, January 9 at 1 pm to face the University of Mount Saint Vincent.
