BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) men's basketball team was defeated 90–73 by SUNY Maritime College on Saturday afternoon at The Hill Center, snapping the Bears' four-game win streak.
The Privateers scored the game's first basket at 19:51, but the Bears answered immediately as Austin Wrynn (Port Washington, N.Y.) cleaned up a miss with a tip-in at 19:30 to tie it. However, Maritime began to separate by turning live-ball turnovers into transition points, using back-to-back fast-break layups at 18:17 and 17:52, then stretching the lead to 12–4 on a three at 16:54. The Privateers held a 17-point lead, 41-24, but the Bears kept pace late in the period by getting to the line and finishing in the paint, but the visitors carried a 44–32 lead into halftime.
An 8-0 Bears run carried into the early stages of the second half, cutting into the margin to nine, 44-35. Maritime answered each push with perimeter shooting and transition chances, finishing with 33 fast-break points and 27 points off turnovers to maintain separation and close out the win.
Colin Mills (White Plains, N.Y.) scored 15 points and went 7-for-7 at the line, while Jacob Idowu (Wiesbaden, Germany) added 13 points and five rebounds. Timothy Richardson (Ozone Park, N.Y.) provided 12 points off the bench, and Wrynn anchored the glass with 12 rebounds.
St. Joseph's returns to The Hill Center on Tuesday, February 10, hosting Farmingdale State at 6 p.m.
