BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team earned a Skyline Conference victory on Tuesday night at The Hill Center, sweeping Yeshiva University, 3–0 (25–17, 25–20, 25–16). The Bears improved to 8–6 overall and 5–3 in Skyline play with the win.
The Bears controlled the opening set with efficient attacking and clean first contact. St. Joseph's hit .423 in the frame with 12 kills and just one error, creating separation through the middle portion of the set before closing it out, 25–17. Jeremias Martinez (Elmhurst, N.Y.) registered six kills in the frame while Etvola Sango (Kinshasa, DR Congo) and Richard Ortega (Roselle, N.J.) combined for four.
Yeshiva kept pace through much of the second set, but St. Joseph's responded with its most productive offensive frame of the night, totaling 17 kills, with Martinez and Sango each contributing six. The Bears used that surge to distance themselves, closing out a 25–20 set win to take a two-set advantage.
In the third, the Bears again dictated the tempo, limiting the Maccabees' chances to build momentum, concluding the match with a 25–16 set win.
Martinez totaled 17 kills, four service aces, and six digs. Sango added 11 kills, while Ortega chipped in five kills. Jack Buscaglia (Hackensack, N.J.) directed the offense with 33 assists and added a block. Mark Belov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed three aces, and Keiran McMullan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Matthew Cottone (Oakdale, N.Y.) shared the team lead with seven digs apiece.
The Bears travel to Purchase College on Thursday, March 19 at 7 pm before starting another three-game home stand in Clinton Hill.
