Softball Garners Sweep of Mount Saint Vincent

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) softball team earned a pair of wins against the University of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon, winning their games 5-2 and 6-2.

Game 1

The Bears opened the scoring early as Payton Walker (Eastvale, Calif.) went yard on a three-run home run in the bottom of the first. The Dolphins plated a pair of runs in the third but SJBK restored their three-run advantage in the fourth behind back-to-back RBI doubles from Leah Magallanes (Sylmar, Calif.) and Makena Lopez (Eastvale, Calif.); holding on to the 5-2 result.

Walker, Nicole Shultz (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and Leila Heller (Belle Chasse, La.) all had two-hit games while Brielle Nelson (Chandler, Ariz.) also hit safely in the win. Makena Burr (Foster City, Calif.) tossed a complete game while punching out six to improve to 7-4 in the circle.

Game 2

Walker again hit a first-inning homer to put the Bears on the board, adding three in the third. Vivian Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.) drove in Walker and Bella Lopez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with a single to right before stealing home as part of a double-steal with Audrey Scott (Rocklin, Calif.).

After Mount Saint Vincent plated two runs in the top of the fifth, Walker struck again with her third home run of the afternoon. The inside-the-park shot also scored Heller, securing a 6-2 victory and a doubleheader sweep of the Dolphins.

Both homers accounted for Walker's hits on the day, scoring thrice. Six additional Bears: Shultz, Heller, V. Garcia, Nelson, Lopez, and Valarie Scott (Tucson, Ariz.) all had a hit. Alyssa Garcia (Montebello, Calif.) also tossed a complete game, earning the win.

The Bears' scheduled doubleheader at Sarah Lawrence College was moved from Sunday, April 19 to Thursday, April 23. First pitch is slated for 3:30 pm.
