TEANECK, N.J. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) baseball team split their Skyline Conference doubleheader at Yeshiva University on Sunday afternoon, coming out on the losing end of a 10-11 walk-off in game one before run-ruling the Maccabees 21-6 in game two.
Game 1
Vincent Camerada (Staten Island, N.Y.) sparked the scoring in the first as his triple scored Justin Haluck (Plainedge, N.Y.) before crossing the plate later in the frame. The Maccabees responded by taking the lead from the Bears in their half of the stanza, growing their advantage to 5-2 after two.
The Bears used RBI singles from William King (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) and Joe Meglio (Howard Beach, N.Y.) in the third to tie the game at five before a pair of two-run innings in the fourth and fifth saw St. Joseph's reclaim the advantage, 9-5.
Yeshiva cut their deficit to 9-8 in the bottom of the fifth before the Bears reached double figures in the sixth as Jayden Loccisano (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored on Justin Alas' (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) base hit, 10-8. The Maccabees, in their final at-bat, saw three runs score en route to a walk-off victory, 11-10.
King, Meglio, and Daniel Popovitch (Brick, N.J.) all had two-hit games, combining for three runs scored and as many RBI. Haluck reached base via four walks and scored thrice. Nicholas Mirabella (Whitestone, N.Y.) started on the bump for the Bears, striking out four Macs over 4.2 innings. Antonio Moran (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished as the losing pitcher, tossing 1.2 innings in relief.
Game 2
While the hosts opened the scoring with three runs in the first, the Bears responded with a massive nine-run outburst in the second inning. St. Joseph's capitalized on just three hits during the frame, taking full advantage of bases-loaded walks, passed balls, and hit batsmen to seize control. A two-RBI single from Justin Alas (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) eventually extended the SJBK cushion to 11-3.
Holding a 16-6 lead late in the game, the Bears put the contest out of reach with a five-run sixth inning. The surge ballooned the advantage to 21-6, effectively securing the victory before the final out in the seventh.
King and George Demacopoulos (Flushing, N.Y.) each had three hits and as many RBI while combining for five of the Bears' 21 runs. Popovitch batted 2-for-5 with three runs. Five additional Bears recorded hits. Brian Danowski (East Quogue, N.Y.) improved to 2-0 on the mound, registering four strikeouts in five innings.
The Bears take on Baruch College in their non-conference finale on Tuesday, April 21 from the campus of the US Merchant Marine Academy. First pitch is slated for 3:30 pm.
