BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) softball team earned two wins over Baruch College on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Bearcats 12-4 in game one before edging the visitors 5-4 in game two.
Game 1
Baruch jumped out early, scoring three runs over the first two innings. SJBK got on the board in the third thanks to a wild pitch, but the Bearcats answered with another run in the top of the fourth to restore their three-run lead.
The Bears responded in a big way in the bottom of the inning, erupting for 11 runs. The rally started with an Alyssa Garcia (Montebello, Calif.) single that brought home fellow rookie Leah Magallanes (Sylmar, Calif.). After a walk, Payton Walker (Eastvale, Calif.) laced a double down the left-field line to drive in two and tie the game at four. Vivian Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.) followed with an inside-the-park home run down the left-field line, scoring three runs and giving the Bears a 7–4 boost.
Magallanes added a sacrifice fly for the first out of the inning, extending the lead to 8–4. Later in the frame, with the Bears ahead 10–4, Walker came up again and delivered another two-run double, scoring A. Garcia and Jessica Jakob (Covina, Calif.) to make it 12–4.
Baruch put a runner on in the fifth but couldn't continue the rally, securing a run-rule victory for the Bears.
Walker finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored. V. Garcia went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Jakob and Nicole Shultz each recorded two hits. A. Garcia scored thrice, and Jakob crossed the plate twice. Garcia also earned the win in the circle, holding the Bearcats to three earned runs.
Game 2
The Bearcats struck first again with two first-inning runs. The Bears countered by tying the game in their half of the inning. V. Garcia doubled in Brielle Nelson (Chandler, Ariz) before a bases-loaded walk brought Walker home. Shultz and Magallanes each batted in runs in the fourth to put St. Joseph's in front 4-2.Â
The next three innings were scoreless for both sides but a two-RBI double in the top of the seventh allowed Baruch to tie the game at four. Nelson, who led off the inning, found her way to third base on a passed ball before tagging up on a flyout. She scored on a Bearcat wild pitch to secure the walk-off triumph, 5-4.
Five Bears recorded hits with Shultz, V. Garcia, and Jakob reaching on doubles. Nelson scored a pair of runs, including the game-winner. A. Garcia improved to 4-4 in the circle while Makena Burr (Foster City, Calif.) struck out three in the no-decision.
