BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's basketball team earned an 81-58 victory over the SUNY College at Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon from The Hill Center; halting their nine-game losing run and splitting the season series with the Panthers.
Destiny Hurt (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka), Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy), and Mercedes Perez (San Antonio, Texas/William Howard Taft) all led the game in scoring while Domenika Sanchez (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Santo Domingo de Guzman) joined the trio in double figures.
How it Happened
Old Westbury held the advantage for must of the opening period before the Bears used a 9-1 run to take the lead, holding the 20-16 edge at the end of the stanza.
A layup on the Panthers' first possession reduced their deficit to just two. However, spearheaded by three pointers from Hurt and Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy), St. Joseph's began to pull away from the visitors; leading 34-26 at the intermission.
A substantial 28-point third quarter further extended the lead between the Bears and Panthers. The navy and gray displayed a 10-of-19 shooting performance from the floor, with Donovan leading the charge with nine points. It resulted in a commanding 62-39 lead by the quarter's conclusion, ultimately securing an 81-58 victory for the Bears at the end of regulation.
