NEWBURGH, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's basketball team were dealt an 86-66 defeat by Mount Saint Mary College on Wednesday evening from the Kaplan Center.
How it Happened
Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) and Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) each drained a pair of triples early in the first quarter, giving the Bears a 12-5 edge. The Knights closed in, seeing a one-point deficit at the 1:23 mark, 22-21, before the navy and gray held on to a slim 25-23 lead at the end of the period.
The hosts equalized the game on a pair of occasions early in the second before the lead swung in their favor for the first time, and for good, on a Charlotte Twohig three-pointer, with 3:23 remaining in the half. The Bears' deficit was reduced to one possession, 37-35, before the Knights took their 45-39 lead into the break.
Domenika Sanchez (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Santo Domingo de Guzman) banked a three-ball to trim MSMC's lead to two, 50-48. Hitting the bucket at the 7:21 point, the Knights held a lead of no greater than six over the next 5:05 in the third. By the end of the quarter, Mount Saint Mary led 65-56; capping the period on a buzzer-beating jumper.
The basket began a 12-2 run that was capped off by Destiny Hurt's (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) drive to the basket three minutes into the fourth. However, with the Bears placed in a 15-point hole, the game was out of reach and the Knights confirmed their 86-66 result.
