Women’s Volleyball Completes Sweep of SUNY Maritime

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn women's volleyball team improved to 3-0 in Skyline Conference play following a straight-set win over SUNY Maritime College (25-20, 25-15, 25-22) on Thursday evening from The Hill Center.

How it Happened

The Bears answered the Privateers' early 5-4 lead in the first set with a 12-2 run, pushing their advantage to 16-7. At set point. 24-16, the visitors rallied with four straight points to narrow the gap to five, but an error sealed the set for the Bears at 25-20. Martina Urgo (Astoria, N.Y.), Taylor Knight (San Ramon, Calif.), and Jenna Diaz (Middle Village, N.Y.) contributed eight kills in this set, while Knight, Diaz, and Rachel Meltsin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each recorded two service aces.

A 7-0 start to the second stanza set the tone for the navy and gray as Maritime only came within four points at their closest. The Bears secured the set with a score of 25-15, led by the offensive efforts of Knight, Urgo, and Jillian McGinty (Glendale, N.Y.).

The Privateers started the third set strong, taking an 8-4 lead behind a trio of aces. However, the Bears responded with an impressive 11-1 run, ultimately establishing a commanding 21-11 lead. Although Maritime narrowed the gap to 24-22, Urgo sealed the set with a kill, securing a 25-22 victory and a 3-0 win for the Bears.

For the Bears

  • Knight finished with 13 kills, 10 digs, and three aces.

  • Urgo registered seven kills, six digs, and four aces.

  • Diaz posted 11 digs to go with four kills and as many service aces.

  • Meltsin dished out 26 assists in addition to her five digs and four aces.

  • Nikiya Philemon (Hamburg, N.J.) had a pair of blocks and as many kills.

  • McGinty had four kills.
