Women’s Basketball Fires on All Cylinders Against CCNY in 2024-25 Curtain Raiser

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn women's basketball team tipped off the 2024-25 season with a 92-35 victory over the City College of New York on Friday evening at The Hill Center.

How it Happened

The Bears jumped out to an early 8-0 lead before the Beavers were able to score. Mercedes Perez (San Antonio, Texas) and Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y.) led the Bears' scoring in the first quarter with nine and seven points, respectively, helping the team to a 28-10 advantage. The Bears built on their lead in the second quarter, taking a commanding 53-20 lead into halftime. They stifled CCNY's offense, holding them to just 22 percent shooting from the field, while Perez, Donovan, and Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y.) all scored in double figures. 

In the second half, the Bears continued their dominance, limiting the Beavers to just 15 points. Nine players scored at least two points, with Perez, Domenika Sanchez (Guayaquil, Ecuador), and Lindsay Dominguez (Bellerose, N.Y.) each contributing seven as the Bears cruised to a 92-35 victory, securing their first win of the season.

For the Bears

  • Perez finished with a commanding 26 points on 10-of-13 shooting to go with four rebounds.

  • Kennedy logged 13 points, shooting 50 percent from the floor, and hauled in six rebounds and forced four steals.

  • Donovan posted 11 points with four steals, three assists, and as many rebounds.

  • Sanchez shot 60 percent from the floor as she finished with nine points, four assists, and two boards.

  • Rookie Nicki Grech (Northville, Mich.) flirted with a double-double behind nine points and eight caroms, leading the team in the latter.

  • Aaniya Telford (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also collected eight rebounds.

  • Shanna Bliss (Astoria, N.Y.) totaled a game-leading five steals and four rebounds.

  • The Bears win their third consecutive season-opening game, a streak dating back to the 2022-23 campaign.
