BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's basketball team returned to The Hill Center on Saturday afternoon but were on the losing end of a 74-89 result against St. Joseph's (Long Island)
How it Happened
In a narrow first quarter, the Golden Eagles saw a lead of as many as six, 15-9. Thanks to the three-ball, the Bears managed to swing the lead in their favor; holding a 26-17 advantage. The visitors netted nine of the following 11 points, trimming the SJBK advantage to 28-26.
Brooklyn held the lead for much of the second quarter but Long Island kept their deficit to within one possession throughout the stanza. The Golden Eagles tied the contest at 36 with 3:12 remaining in the half, reclaiming the lead just over a minute later. They led 42-39 at the intermission. Mercedes Perez (San Antonio, Texas/William Howard Taft) and Domenika Sanchez (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Santo Domingo de Guzman) each had 12 points in the first 20 minutes, leading all players.
In the second half, Destiny Hurt (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) – on 7-of-11 shooting – dropped 15 points with Perez and Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) trailing behind the senior. However, SJLI failed to surrender their lead, taking their largest lead of the afternoon with 2:39 in the fourth quarter at 85-69 before earning the 89-74 triumph.

Perez dropped a game-best 20 points, shooting 6-of-11 from three-point land. She collected seven rebounds, handed out three assists, and forced two steals.

In addition to her 15 points, Hurt pulled three boards and forced three steals.

Sanchez's 13 points are a season-best.

Donovan finished with 12 points, three boards, and two steals.

Shanna Bliss (Astoria, N.Y./Bryant) had a season-high 11 points and were two rebounds shy of a double-double.
