Women's Basketball Endures Defeat to Manhattanville

PURCHASE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) women's basketball team were defeated by Manhattanville College, 90-57, on Thursday evening.

The Valiants held a slim 5-4 edge before scoring the next seven points in the quarter, 12-7. Their lead grew to 24-15 at the end of the quarter.

After the Bears netted the first three points of the second quarter, they were soon overwhelmed by a Manhattanville 14-0 run to see their deficit grow to 38-18. The Valiants held a 45-23 halftime lead.

Thanks in large part to a 26-point third quarter, the second half saw Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) score her 13 points on the night; shooting 5-of-9 from the field and 3-of-5 from three-point distance. Mercedes Perez (San Antonio, Texas/William Howard Taft) narrowly trailed the sophomore with nine points over the 40 minutes. However, the Bears were outscored by three points in the period, ultimately suffering a 90-57 setback at the end of the contest.

For the Bears

  • Perez finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds, her first double-double since the Bears' January 5 matchup with Sarah Lawrence.

  • Destiny Hurt (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka) totaled 12 points and seven rebounds.

  • Four of Grace Kennedy's (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) six rebounds came on the offensive glass. She, and Shanna Bliss (Astoria, N.Y./Bryant), finished with six points.
