NAPLES, FLA. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) softball team concluded their participation at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with wins over Alfred State College and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 8-2 and 2-1, on Wednesday. Splitting their games in Florida, Bears begin the season with a 3-3 record as they head back north with three weeks before the start of Skyline Conference play.
How it Happened vs. Alfred State
Two RBI singles resulted in a 2-0 lead for the Pioneers in the top of the second inning. However, an error in the bottom of the frame led to Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) and Leila Heller (Belle Chasse, La./Belle Chasse) crossing the plate, tying the game at two.
Later in the inning, Arianna Heinsch (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) drew a bases-loaded walk before two more runs scored on Alfred State's second error of the stanza, increasing the lead to 5-2.
Both teams scored in the fourth inning, with the Bears continuing to tack on runs in each of the remaining three innings. Vivian Garcia (Eastvale, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt) contributed two RBI during this span, leading to the Bears' 8-4 victory.Â
How it Happened vs. MCLA
Hailey Peabody led the contest with a single to short before scoring with two outs in the first. The bases were juiced for Jessica Jakob (Covina, Calif./Edgewood) in the bottom half of the inning, who delivered a two-RBI double down the left-field line to swing the lead in the Bears' favor.
Despite the Trailblazers' persistent threats, Burr's resilience prevented MCLA from scoring throughout the game. The Bears extended their lead in the fifth inning with a Garcia sacrifice fly, followed by an error that enabled Sofia Logreco from (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) and Olivia Martinez (Tomball, Texas/Tomball Memorial) to cross the plate, resulting in the 5-1 win.
