Baseball Holds Off Late Baruch Comeback to Capture Season Series Sweep

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) baseball team held off a late Baruch College comeback on Tuesday afternoon, earning a 7-6 triumph; sweeping the season series with the Bearcats.

How it Happened

Chris Arcati (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) opened the scoring with a home run to dead center in the second inning. Roy Longarzo went yard in the next half inning to tie the game at one apiece.

The center-fielder for the Bearcats drove in a pair of runs in the fifth on a two-base hit before scoring later in the frame, giving the visitors a 4-1 advantage. The home half of the inning saw St. Joseph's trim the deficit in half on Sean Schneeberg's (Sacramento, Calif./Del Oro) double to plated Vincent Camerada (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp).

The navy and gray drew the game level on a two-RBI single from Alex Goldberg (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) in the sixth. Camerada's eighth-inning single sent Anthony Faggiano (Hicksville, N.Y./Bethpage) home, swinging the lead back in the Bears' favor. Schneeberg then singled in a pair to extend the margin to 7-4.

As with their initial meeting less than two weeks ago, Baruch initiated a comeback in the ninth. Longarzo hit a two-run homer to cut the SJBK lead to one. An attempted steal at home resulted in the game's final out as the Bears maintained the 7-6 edge.

For the Bears

  • Schneeberg went 2-for-5 with three RBI.

  • Michael Gardener (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) batted 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored.

  • Brian Sanchez went 1-for-4 with a double.

  • Faggiano scored a pair of runs. He also threw five innings on the mound, striking out three.

  • Mike Dedella (Pemberton, N.J./Pemberton Township) was tabbed with the pitching win.
