BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) softball team earned a pair of non-conference wins over Hunter College on Wednesday afternoon, 4-0 and 8-6, from the campus of LIU Post.
How it Happened (Game 1)
All four of the Bears' runs came on RBI singles, beginning with Olivia Martinez's (Tomball, Texas/Tomball Memorial) in the second inning. Arianna Heinsch (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall Academy) and Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) delivered base knocks in the third followed by Peyton Walker's (Eastvale, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt) the following frame.
Leila Heller (Belle Chasse, La./Belle Chasse) pitched a complete-game shutout for the second outing in a row, striking out six Hawks in the win.
How it Happened (Game 2)
Hunter saw three runs in the second inning, two of which scored on Sophia Perez's triple, but the Bears trimmed it to 3-1 at the end of the stanza. The Hawks led by as many as four, 6-2, after four innings of play.
The game shifted in the Bears' favor thanks to a six-run fifth inning. Walker and Sofia Logreco (San Diego, Calif./Mission Hills) scored on Lauren Van der Kamp's (Sacramento, Calif./Rosemont) single to begin the frame before scoring on Jessica Jakob's (Covina, Calif./Edgewood) base knock.
Audrey Scott (Rocklin, Calif./Whitney) singled through the left side in the next at-bat, sending Poppett home and tying the contest at 6-6. Continuing to ride the momentum, Jakob and Scott scored later in the inning on hits from Heinsch and Walker, giving the navy and gray an 8-6 edge.
Heller, in relief, prevented a Hunter comeback as she tossed a pair of scoreless innings to preserve the SJBK result.
