PALISADES PARK, N.J. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. (Brooklyn) baseball team earned a pair of victories over Yeshiva University, 22-2 and 25-1, on Sunday afternoon.
How it Happened (Game 1)
The Maccabees scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first before the Bears reduced the edge in half in the second and tacked on three runs in the third to hold a 4-2 advantage.
Michael Gardener (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and Anthony Faggiano (Hicksville, N.Y./Bethpage) combined for four RBI in the Bears' 10-run top of the fifth to possess a commanding 14-2 lead. Eight runs over the next two innings sealed the navy and gray's 22-2 result.
On the bump, rookie Brian Sanchez (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H Calhoun) hurled a complete game; striking out eight while allowing three hits and as many walks.
How it Happened (Game 2)
Gardener and Miguel Toribio (Brooklyn, N.Y./Williamsburg Prep) each had RBI hits in the first to give SJBK an early 4-0 lead; growing to 11-0 in the second behind a two-RBI double from Chris Stegmuller (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) and Nick Tapio's (Sacramento, Calif./Christian Brothers) single to left later in the stanza.
Faggiano and Sanchez came up with RBI singles in the fourth. It was then followed by an eight-run fifth inning as the Bears crossed the 20-run threshold for the second time in the twinbill. The Maccabees got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as St. Joseph's took game two, 25-1.
For the Bears (Game 1)

Gardener batted 3-for-4 with a double, triple, three RBI and a pair of runs scored.

Faggiano finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

Toribio went 2-for-2 and crossed the plate four times.

Matt Arcati (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) stole four bases, one shy of matching the SJBK single-game record (5 by Anthony Inserillo in 2014).
For the Bears (Game 2)

Faggiano went 4-for-6 in the back end of the doubleheader, scoring three runs and driving in a pair. He also stole three bases.

Stegmuller batted in three runs and scored as many.

Mike Dedella (Pemberton, N.J./Pemberton Township) earned the win on the mound, striking out six while preventing Yeshiva from posting a run or hit.
