Women's Basketball Stifles Sarah Lawrence

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn women's basketball team picked up a 78-20 home victory over Sarah Lawrence College on Tuesday evening from The Hill Center.

How it Happened

The Bears the first five points in the opening quarter and seven of the first nine. The Gryphons equalized the contest at seven from the free throw line at 5:57, their lone visit to the charity stripe, before the Bears began distancing themselves, winning the quarter, 18-9.

Sarah Lawrence was limited to four points in the second quarter as St. Joseph's led 45-13 after two. Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y.) and Mercedes Perez (San Antonio, Texas) led the scoring with 12 and 11 points in the first 20 minutes, respectively.

The Bears outscored the Gryphons 33-7 in the second half, paced by contributions from Donovan, Nikki Grech (Northville, Mich.), and Gabriella Cinque (Staten Island, N.Y.); who all scored six points while Grech and Aaniya Telford (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each hauled in seven rebounds in the stretch.

For the Bears

  • Donovan finished as the team's leading scorer with 18 points on 6-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-6 from three-point land. She also had six rebounds. 

  • Perez also finished in double-figure scoring behind 13 points while totaling four rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

  • Grech led the side on the glass with 11 boards, coming two points short of a double-double. She also forced three steals.

  • Telford finished with eight rebounds, six points, and three assists. Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y.) also had eight points.

  • Domenika Sanchez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) logged a statline of seven points, four assists, three steals and as many rebounds. 

  • Shanna Bliss (Astoria, N.Y.) forced a team-best five steals to go with four rebounds and as many points.
