Starting Five in Double Figures Not Enough for Women’s Basketball at St. Joseph’s (Long Island)

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — All five starters for the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn women's basketball team scored in double figures on Saturday afternoon. However, St. Joseph's (Long Island) emerged with a 77-66 victory at the Danzi Center.

How it Happened

The lead alternated between the two sides early on before the Bears led by as many as seven, 18-11, propelled by three pointers from Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y.). The Golden Eagles reduced the Bears' lead to 21-20 at the end of the first quarter.

Patchogue briefly regained the lead at the start of the second quarter, but three-pointers from Donovan and Aaniya Telford (Brooklyn, N.Y.) put Brooklyn back on top, 32-29. With four minutes left in the first half, the hosts evened the score at 34-34, then again used the three-ball to take a 42-37 lead at the break.

The third quarter saw four further lead changes. The Bears saw a three-point lead with 2:52 remaining however, the Golden Eagles used an 11-2 run to close the quarter with a 61-55 lead. The run grew to 14-2 thanks to an SJLI trey to begin the fourth quarter. The Patchogue lead grew to its largest with 4:20 on the clock, 73-60, before winning the contest by 11, 77-66.

For the Bears

  • Telford led all players with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting and 3-of-4 from distance. She also had four rebounds.

  • Donovan had 14 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.

  • Domenika Sanchez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) dropped a season-best 13 points to go with six rebounds and three assists.

  • Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y.) totaled 11 points, eight rebounds, and a pair of steals.

  • Nikki Grech (Northville, Mich.) had a game-leading 11 boards while her 10 points brought her to her second-career double-double in as many games. She also had four assists.

  • The Bears outshot the Golden Eagles from the floor 42.9 percent to 35.1 and from beyond the arc 46.2 percent to 29.7 percent.
