OLD WESTBURY N.Y. — Hours after being named Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week for her performances against Purchase and St. Joseph's (Long Island), Nikki Grech (Northville, Mich.) set the St. Joseph's University N.Y - Brooklyn women's basketball single-game rebounding record on Tuesday night at SUNY Old Westbury. The Bears completed the season sweep of the Panthers with a 97-39 road victory at the Clark Athletic Center.Â
How it Happened
The Bears defense came out strong forcing ten turnovers in the first quarter which St. Joseph's would turn into 11 points. Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y) knocked down three of the Bears four three-pointers in a second quarter where they shot 40% from deep. St. Joseph's led by a score of 45-24 at the half.Â
A 13-0 run to start the third quarter gave the Bears a 60-24 lead with 5:56 remaining in the quarter. The Bears held the Panthers to just six points in the third giving the Bears a 40 point lead heading to the fourth. Entering the fourth with 22 rebounds to her name, already a season-best, Grech collected four caroms by the 6:04 mark to eclipse the single-game record; adding four more rebounds before her night was done. St. Joseph's outscored Old Westbury 27-9 in the final frame en route to a 97-39 win.Â
For the Bears
- Grech had a double-double of 30 rebounds and 14 points. The previous single-game rebounding record was held by Samantha Retas '15, who hauled in 25 boards against Vaughn College in January 2015. Grech shot 7-of-12 from the floor and also had four assists.
- Donovan, who featured on the Skyline Weekly Honor Roll on Tuesday, led all scorers with 24 points on 6-of-10 from three while adding five steals and four rebounds.
- With 21 points, Jasmine Chan-Clayton (Melbourne, Australia) nailed seven three-pointers, just shy of the single-game record in that category.
- Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y.) had a season-best 18 points, four rebounds, three assists, and as many steals.
- Gabriella Cinque (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, both career-highs for the rookie.
- All seven Bears who suited up on Tuesday evening found the scoresheet.
- The 58-point margin of victory is the largest this season, surpassing the 57-point triumph over CCNY in November.Â
