SUNY Maritime Holds Off Men's Basketball in Skyline Opener

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, New York (Brooklyn) men's basketball team was defeated 92–74 by SUNY Maritime College on Saturday afternoon to open the Skyline Conference slate.

The Privateers established early control, shooting 52.3 percent from the field in the first half to build a 52–34 lead at the break, scoring 40 points in the paint over the opening 20 minutes. Jacob Idowu (Wiesbaden, Germany) kept the Bears within reach early, converting multiple free throws and interior finishes, while Colin Mills (White Plains, N.Y.) and Austin Wrynn (Port Washington, N.Y.) also provided a combined 14 points in the half.

Maritime continued to extend the margin in the second half, pushing the lead beyond 30 midway through the period. St. Joseph's responded with improved offensive rhythm, highlighted by drives and fast-break finishes from Maven Cummings (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who scored repeatedly in transition, and contributions off the bench from Blaise Corozzo (Howard Beach, N.Y.) and Maxwell Wignall (Rocky Point, N.Y.). The Bears scored 40 points in the second half but were unable to close the gap as the hosts maintained control to begin the Skyline slate 1-0.

Cummings led the Bears with a game- and career-high 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting. He and Nazareth Warren (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also came down with a contest-best six rebounds. Idowu added 11 points, while Wignall finished with 10 points to round out the double-figure scoring. Corozzo chipped in nine points. while Mills recorded eight points. 

The Bears will return to the hardwood following the holiday break on Saturday, January 3 at 2 pm against Farmingdale State College.
