Trio in Double Figures Lifts Women's Basketball Past Sarah Lawrence

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn women's basketball team earned a 60-53 win over Sarah Lawrence College on Wednesday evening from the Campbell Sports Center. Kristen Donovan (Maspeth, N.Y.) and Nikki Grech (Northville, Mich.) both recorded double-doubles while Jasmine Chan-Clayton (Melbourne, Australia) joined the pair in double-figure scoring.

How it Happened
Chan-Clayton and Donovan drained triples on their first field goal attempts of the night. Grace Kennedy (Maspeth, N.Y.) banked a three midway through the quarter to give the Bears an 11-4 lead. However, the Gryphons closed out the quarter on an 8-0 run to lead 12-11 at the end of the opening 10 minutes. The Bears tied the contest on a pair of occasions in the second but Sarah Lawrence held on to the lead throughout the quarter, entering the half up 28-27.

The Gryphons scored the opening basket of the third quarter before Chan-Clayton and Donovan combined to score 11 points, nine of which came from distance, to reclaim the lead, 38-30; their largest advantage of the game. The hosts tied the game at 42 with less than a minute remaining before a Grech basket at 33 seconds preserved the SJBK edge heading into the fourth, 44-42. SLC briefly saw the advantage return to their favor, leading 50-48 with 3:07 on the clock. Domenika Sanchez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) tied it at the line before Shanna Bliss (Astoria, N.Y.) converted a basket on a turnover to give the Bears the lead, holding on to it for the remainder of the contest; winning 60-53.

For the Bears
  • Donovan, who played all 40 minutes, finished with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds. She added five assists and as many steals to her totals.
