FORT MYERS, FLA. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn softball team swept their opposition on day two at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The day started with a 10-2 victory over Crown College (Minn.) before defeating Alverno College for the second time in as many days, 10-0.
How it Happened vs. Crown
Following a scoreless first inning, the Polars scored in the top of the second. The Bears responded with four runs in their half of the inning, spearheaded by RBI base-hits by Audrey Scott (Rocklin, Calif.) and Brielle Nelson (Chandler, Ariz.).
The score remained 4-1 until the bottom of the fifth when the Bears saw RBI singles from Valarie Scott (Tucson, Ariz.) and Lauren Van Der Kamp (Sacramento, Calif.) extended the lead to 6-1. The former scored on a Crown wild pitch later in the frame, 7-1.
The Polars added their second run in the top of the sixth, but a single by Vivian Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.) and a double by V. Scott allowed the Bears to extend their lead to 10-2, securing the win by run rule.
How it Happened vs. Alverno
Payton Walker (Eastvale, Calif.) and Garcia helped kick off the scoring, with their hits contributing to a four-run second inning. Van Der Kamp and Jessica Jakob (Covina, Calif.) crossed the plate in the third to push the Bears' advantage to 6-0.
St. Joseph's confirmed their run-rule win in the fifth as a series of RBI hits – led by a V. Scott double and singles from Olivia Martinez (Tomball, Texas), Walker, and Van Der Kamp – gave the Bears a 10-0 win. The Bears improved to 3-1 in their four games in Florida.
For the Bears vs. Crown

Garcia and Van Der Kamp each had three hits and an RBI.

Scott batted in three runs as she finished 2-for-3.

Walker also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs.

Makena Burr (Foster City, Calif.) turned in a complete-game, four-strikeout performance; improving to 3-0 on the young campaign.

Six Bears – Martinez, Walker, Garcia, V. Scott, Van Der Kamp, and Kamryn Walls (Middle Village, N.Y.) – had two-hit games.

Jakob and Burr also had base-hits with Jakob scoring a pair of runs and Burr registering an RBI.
