NAPLES, FLA. — To conclude their three-day stay at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn softball team defeated Alverno College, 8-6 on Wednesday morning. The Bears finished their Florida trip 4-2, following a 3-6 loss to St. Thomas University (Fla.)
Against the Inferno, senior Lauren Van Der Kamp (Sacramento, Calif.) eclipsed 100 career hits while junior Leila Heller (Belle Chasse, La.) reached 100 career strikeouts.
How it Happened vs. Alverno
The Inferno recorded their first runs against the Bears after 10.1 innings of play, scoring three runs at the end of the first inning. The Bears responded in their half of the inning, as Van Der Kamp hit a double to bring in Olivia Martinez (Tomball, Texas) for the team's first run and to mark the senior's 100th career hit. Payton Walker (Eastvale, Calif.) followed with an RBI double, and Brielle Nelson (Chandler, Ariz.) then singled to center field, tying the game at 3-3.
The deadlock remained for the next two and a half innings with Heller picking up her 100th strikeout at the end of the second stanza. St. Joseph's took their first lead of the contest in the fourth thanks to Vivian Garcia's (Eastvale, Calif.) bases-clearing double, making the score 6-3. Martinez and Van Der Kamp scored the team's insurance runs in the sixth, 8-3.
The Bears fended off Alverno's comeback attempt in the seventh inning and secured the 8-6 victory.
How it Happened vs. St. Thomas (Fla.)
Van Der Kamp drove in the game's first run in the third followed by an error allowing Kamryn Walls (Middle Village, N.Y.) to score in the fourth, giving the Bears a 2-0 advantage. The Bobcats used two-RBI triples in the home half of the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game before taking a 5-2 lead.
A two-out base hit by Garcia drove in Audrey Scott (Rocklin, Calif.) in the top of the sixth, but St. Thomas regained their three-run lead in the bottom of the inning and held on for the win, 6-3.

Van Der Kamp went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Martinez and Nelson also had two-hit games with the former crossing the plate twice and the latter batting in three.
