PURCHASE, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn baseball team opened their Skyline Conference schedule with a pair of deficits to Purchase College on Saturday afternoon, 10-11 and 1-5.
How it Happened (Game 1)
The Bears had a massive first inning as doubles from Miguel Toribio (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Andrew Ardito (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and Joe Meglio (Howard Beach, N.Y.) resulted in an early 5-0 advantage.
Now leading 5-1, Ardito recorded his second RBI in the second, allowing Michael Gardener (Farmingdale, N.Y.) to score. Joe Provvisiero (Ozone Park, N.Y.) scored in the third before batting in a pair in the fourth to further extend the SJBK lead to 9-1.
The Panthers cut that gap to 9-7 in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a six-run stanza. Both teams scored in the fifth to keep the Bears' advantage at two, 10-8.
In the seventh, the hosts mounted a comeback. A wild pitch reduced the deficit to 10-9 before a two-RBI single to right allowed the tying and winning runs to come out of game one on top, 11-10.
How it Happened (Game 2)
The Bears again drew first blood as Ardito scored on Matt Arcati's (Brooklyn, N.Y.) fielder's choice. Extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs in the third and fourth innings, saw the Panthers lead 3-1. They added runs in the latter two innings to confirm the 5-1 result and the sweep of SJBK.
