BROOKLYN, N.Y. — In their return to The Hill Center on Wednesday night, the St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn men's volleyball team was downed by Purchase College in straight sets (20-25, 17-25, 22-25).
How it Happened
The Bears controlled much of the first set, with first-year Jeremias Martinez (Elmhurst, N.Y.) leading the charge with four kills. However, after a Panther timeout, the visitors fought back, tying the game at 19 before an ace gave them the lead. They held on to win the set 25-20.
The start of the second set remained tight, with the score knotted at 9-9, but Purchase took advantage with a six-point swing, pulling ahead 15-9. Despite late kills from Martinez, Frank Rivera (Astoria, N.Y.), and Mark Belov (Brooklyn, N.Y.), St. Joseph's couldn't overcome the Panthers, who won the set 25-17.
The two sides exchanged points throughout the third set as a strong attack saw the Bears leading 15-11. It was followed by a 10-0 Panther run, giving the guests a 21-15 lead. Errors brought the SJBK deficit down to 22-20 but Purchase was able to clinch the set, 25-22.
