Softball Powers Past Lehman in Midweek Sweep

BRONX, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn softball team picked up 12-3 and 13-2 wins over Lehman College on Wednesday night in the Bronx.

How it Happened (Game 1)

Kiara Coy (Clifton, N.J.) found the right-center field gap to plate Olivia Martinez (Tomball, Texas) and Vivian Garcia (Eastvale, Calif.) for the game's first runs in the first inning. Later in the frame, Jessica Jakob (Covina, Calif.) batted in a pair to extend the Bears' early lead to 4-0. The Lightning reduced the lead to two in the bottom of the first before SJBK restored their four-run advantage in the second; headlined by a Payton Walker (Eastvale, Calif.) RBI double, 6-2.

Outscoring the hosts 6-1 over the remaining four innings, Garcia and Walker each had a pair of RBI in that stretch – with the former capitalizing on a seventh-inning triple – en route to the game-one win, 12-3.

How it Happened (Game 2)

The offense slowed down in the second, but in the third, Garcia and Walker combined to drive in three of the Bears' four runs. Garcia's single to left field brought Coy home, and Walker's double to center plated both Martinez and Garcia.

The Bears added two more runs in the fourth, with Lehman responding with one of their own to make it 9-2. A triple by Lauren Van Der Kamp (Sacramento, Calif.) sparked another four-run inning, giving the Bears a 13-2 lead before they closed out the game with a run-rule victory.

For the Bears (Game 1)

  • Garcia batted 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI.

  • Walker had three hits and as many RBI.

  • Coy and Jakob had two RBI each and were two of six Bears to finish with two hits.

  • Makena Burr (Foster City, Calif.) struck out nine to win her fifth game of the year.

For the Bears (Game 2)

  • Garcia and Van Der Kamp each had three hits and two RBI while combining for four runs.

  • Walker finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and scoring a run.

  • Autumn Poppett (San Diego, Calif.) batted in a pair as she went 1-for-2 at the plate.

  • Four other Bears registered a base hit.

  • Leila Heller (Belle Chasse, La.) fanned five in five innings for the win in the circle.
