BRONX, N.Y. — The St. Joseph's University, N.Y. – Brooklyn baseball team faced Lehman College for the second time this season late Tuesday afternoon. Fueled by home runs from seniors Doug Paider (Glendale, N.Y.) and Chris Perez (Bronx, N.Y.) and a nine-run fifth inning, the Bears came away with a 15-7 win over the Lightning.
How it Happened
The Bears drew first blood when Paider homered to right field in the third inning. However, the Lightning benefited from extra-base hits to snatch the lead, 4-1. A two-run fourth frame saw Paider drive in Joe Meglio (Howard Beach, N.Y.) on an RBI single before scoring himself on a Lehman miscue, trimming the deficit to 4-3.
Lehman responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to 5-3. However, St. Joseph's flipped the script in the fifth. The rally began with a string of bases-loaded walks, tying the game before holding a 7-5 edge. The bags remained full for Perez who belted a grand slam to left field, ballooning the lead to 11-5. Christopher Stegmuller (Baldwin, N.Y.) crossed the plate on Matt Arcati's (Brooklyn, N.Y.) single, extending the advantage to 12-5.
The hosts added a pair in their end of the stanza before the Bears added three more runs. RBI doubles from Stegmuller and Arcati pushed the lead to 15-7, holding on for the result.
